Autistic-led programs and an alumni network creating positive change
About the Academy
The Academy provides programs, pathways and networks that create communities where autistic people fully contribute and influence policy, practice and culture in partnership with their peers.
Through education, training and connection, we support individuals to build their knowledge, skills and confidence, while drawing on the expertise of alumni with diverse communication styles, support needs and lived experiences to shape and strengthen our work.
Since 2015, more than 265 people across Australia, and internationally, have taken part in 11 Academy programs, creating a diverse and growing alumni network.

Our programs are autistic-led and co-designed with autistic people of diverse life experiences, cultural backgrounds and skills.
We strive to create an environment where autistic adults feel comfortable and welcome. A safe place where unique needs and ways of experiencing the world are recognised and respected, fostering belonging and acceptance.
Future Leaders has been a place of validation and acceptance that feels so overdue and needed. I was beginning to wilt and Future Leaders watered me and fertilised me and encouraged me to grow.
History and governance
In 2015, we delivered our first Academy Research Program, co-founded by Emeritus Professor Sylvia Rodger. In 2015, autistic participants unanimously honoured her with the title "Honorary Research Academy Member" for her dedication, openness, and willingness to understand autistic culture, thinking, and humour.
Today, the Academy is overseen by an autistic-majority Management Committee, ensuring autistic perspectives continue to shape our programs, priorities and impact.
